PRP were appointed by Haven Health Properties (part of Assura PLC) to join a team tasked with converting a longstanding derelict commercial building into a medical centre with consulting rooms and staff accommodation in Portsmouth.
PRP provided full civil and structural engineering services and undertook intrusive ground investigations.
The building had suffered water ingress and required extensive structural intervention to strengthen the original steel frame. The reuse of the existing superstructure, including a lightweight single storey vertical extension and strengthening of the existing steel frame, also provided a hugely environmentally beneficial scheme saving the embodied energy and associated CO2 of a new build construction.
We also provided party wall and principal designer services, which due to the site’s location in a busy shopping centre, led to us undertaking extensive negotiations with tenants and building owners of the adjoining shopping mall.
This medical centre provides community services within an accessible location and also safeguards Commercial Roads street scene and a part of Portsmouth commercial history.
