Civil Case Study
New Quarry Access Road & Culvert, Euxton
PRP Responsibilities
Design of culvert base to support 2.4m deep and 3.6m wide precast concrete culverts.
Design of 750m of new bituminous access road for a new quarry in Euxton Lancashire, including cutting slopes and embankments.
Undertaking a ground investigation including a WAC assessment
Designing the drainage system for the road.
Complications included
1. Designing the road to be built on previously deposited fill material which was deposited on the site when the M6 motorway was built in the late 1950’s. When works started on site there was real problems with ‘cow-bellying’ so PRP recommended the use of a geogrid to enhanced the sub-formation CBR value.
2. Designing the culvert slab to dissipate the loads from the 40 tonne Volvo A30 that will be using it.
